STREET SERIES KICKS OFF WITH SUCCESS, QDRC NEXT UP AT WILLOWBANK RACEWAY

4 February 2014

The competitive racing season at Willowbank Raceway is now officially open following the successful running of the first round of the 2014 Street Series at the weekend (Saturday 1 February, 2014).

More than 90 racers fronted up on Saturday to Queensland’s premier drag racing facility to compete for glory in the Street Sedan (split into three racing brackets of Hot Street, Quick Eliminator and Street Eliminator), Street Bike and Powder Puff (ladies only) categories.

As the entry level competition for aspiring drag race champions, the Street Series provides an accessible and affordable competition for Sedan and Motorcycle racers who wish to prove their mettle on the race track while chasing a coveted Queensland Drag Racing Championship (QDRC) trophy. Taking victory on Saturday were Josh Fletcher (Quick Eliminator), Johnny McGrath (Hot Street), Blaze Hansen (Street Eliminator), Paul Astridge (Street Bike) and Susanne Fletcher (Powder Puff). The Street Series will next be on track on 1 March 2014 – entries are available at the gate for $45 which admits one racer and one spectator, with spectator entry just $20 for adults and $18 for students with ID while children aged 13 and under gain free admission.

Next up on-track at Willowbank Raceway is the first of eight QDRC rounds for the year, to be held on Saturday 15 February hosting championship racing for the Modified, Super Sedan, Super Street, Modified Bike, Junior Dragster and Super Gas brackets.

The action for February won’t stop there either, with Sunday 23 February set to host the first Nostalgia Drag Racing hit-out of the year, and as always, these events will be run alongside the track’s Wednesday evening and Saturday Test n Tune events where anyone is able to come along and try their luck against their friends at the Ipswich facility.

Willowbank Raceway CEO Tony Manson said he was looking forward to an exciting competitive season ahead.

“The first round of the Street Series provided a great start to our 2014 season at the weekend and I was really pleased to see more than 90 racers heading out to our facility for the event,” said Manson.

“This year we have made a commitment to growing the grassroots level of our drag racing events which includes not only the Street Series but also our weekly Test n Tune events, as we seek to provide affordable entry-level opportunities for those who want to get out on the track and show just what they can do!

“I think we are off to a great beginning following Saturday’s opening round and can’t wait until the next Street Series event on 1 March, but in the meantime we have plenty of other events taking place including the first round of the Queensland Drag Racing Championship and also the ever-popular antics of the Nostalgia Drag Racing scene on 23 February.”
